1. A venue with room to mingle
A private dining room, rooftop bar or function room lets the group move between tables instead of staying with the same four people all night. Start with your headcount and budget per person, then shortlist venues that fit both.
Ask whether the venue allows you to use its screen and sound system, and whether you can bring in a photo station or decorations. Tagvenue's list of graduation party venues in Singapore is one place to compare options.
2. A slideshow of your years together
A slideshow brings back orientation camp, project deadlines, hall life and trips together. Ask each group of friends for a few photos, so it represents the whole cohort rather than the organisers' camera rolls.
Work out the length before collecting material. Six groups contributing 30 seconds each already make three minutes. Give one person the final edit, and test it on the venue's screen and sound before the night.
3. Photos with coursemates and prints to take home
Give people time to take photos with the friends they want to remember, not only the one group shot. A print to take home turns those photos into a keepsake from the night.
With Monotone's receipt photo booth, guests take photos on their own phones and collect a custom black-and-white photo receipt from a staffed station, with your course and graduation year in the design. An optional digital guestbook keeps everyone's photos and messages together.
For posed portraits with studio lighting or colour prints, a conventional photo booth or photographer suits you better.
4. A quiz about your course and campus days
A short quiz gets tables comparing memories. Mix picture questions with multiple choice so nobody needs to be on the microphone.
A short set could include:
- Matching a cropped photo to a lecture theatre, canteen or hall.
- Naming the module, project or trip from one photo.
- Putting a few cohort events in the right order.
Avoid questions about grades, relationships or anyone's private messages. One answer sheet per table keeps it quick.
5. Toasts from friends and lecturers
Two or three short toasts give the evening one shared moment. Ask a friend from each group, or a lecturer who knew the cohort, and agree a time limit of a couple of minutes each.
Tell people in advance if you're asking them to speak. An open microphone can run long; a few planned toasts are easier to fit around dinner.
6. Message cards for each other
A table of cards and pens gives people a quieter thing to do between courses. They can write to friends and hand the cards over themselves, which suits messages that are personal rather than for everyone to read.
If you'd rather keep a shared record, a memory board with a prompt such as "one moment from these years I'll remember" works too. There's little reason to add both if your photo station already has a digital guestbook.
7. A dress code or theme
A colour or theme connects the invitations, the room and everyone's photos without a costume competition. Give examples at different levels of effort, so nobody feels they must buy something new.
If you add a best-dressed vote, keep entry optional and announce the result once.
8. Karaoke for the after-party
Booking a karaoke room after dinner gives the people who want a longer night somewhere to go, while others head home. Group songs and duets let everyone join without a solo turn.
Book the room in advance for your likely numbers, and share the plan on the invitation so people can decide whether to stay.
Putting the party together
For a dinner with close friends, a slideshow, photos and a couple of toasts are enough around the meal. For a bigger cohort party, add the quiz or message cards so people can mix, and keep karaoke as an optional ending.
If you're planning a school graduation night as part of a student committee, check activities and suppliers with the teacher in charge first.
For graduation photo receipts, contact Monotone with your date, venue and expected attendance. Packages start from S$250 for the first 2 hours.
